(Chuck Berry – Too Much Monkey Business)
today’s dialogue hears some of the jurors laying out the reasoning behind arriving at their guilty verdict and begins to give us an insight into them as people. One thing’s for sure, with the amount of top quality dialogue in this film it could turn into a long musical journey..not sure I have enough 1957 cuts in the vaults to cope so might have to throw a few from previous years.
the slice of musicology is from, some say, the King of Rock & Roll…none other than Charles Edward Anderson Berry. About whom John Lennon was quoted to have said
“If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it ‘Chuck Berry’.”
Taken from his first LP ‘After School Sessions’, (a favourite down Circus Street), released in, yep you guessed it, 1957. The song has been covered by Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Yardbirds and The Kinks such was Chuck’s stature among musicians. If you listen to Bob Dylan’s ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’ it’s almost the same song but with different lyrics.
the top notch dialogue, and time given to presenting each of the characters to us is one of the reasons that this is such a great film and also
why I shall be watching it again as each character deserves concentrating on throughout.

some do say that…personally I havent got an opinion on it, which is why I quoted John Lennon who obviously did have one. Me and Chuck have never been that close. If I thought about it the cat’s music is a bit too Rock & Roll for me. I am more of a ‘Soul’ man mesang !!!
what was that about fighting talk? hahahahahahahahaha

Lennon wasn’t on his own you know. Every popular (sic) musician since then… and I include people like the composer Philip Glass) bows a knee to Mr. Rock ‘an Roll, Chuck Berry.
“He is it’s greatest songwriter, the main shaper of it’s instrumental shape, one of it’s greatest guitarists, and one of it’s greatest performers. Quite simply, without him there would be no Elvis, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, or Bob Dylan”

who said that?
not that I am disagreeing as he was most certainly an influential figure in the development of popular music. can’t say I have ever booked him as a ‘great’ guitarist though. definitely a great performer and his songwriting is of the times.

No not really, only joking.
To answer your question. I nicked the quote from The Definitive 1000 Songs Of All Time – No. 783 Chuck Berry “Sweet Little Sixteen” 1958.

Actually, I’ve just found out the quote is attributed to Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. If you’re interested, there’s also a very informative write-up on me Man at eartothesound.wordpress.com
