musicology #16

(The Toppers – If Money Grew On Trees)

slipping out of the 80’s boogie in to some, (1944), early vocal group action. a serving of social commentary from over half a century ago that still rings bells loud and clear.

“tell me more boy, tell me more”

p.s the Cats in question are actually ‘the 5 Red Caps’ moonlighting for the Savoy label.

musicology #15

(Maze – When I’m Alone)

back to the one tune with one of my favourite pieces of 80’s boogie.

Sunday afternoon ‘Soul spectrum’ selection … in training for the soul weekender next month.

musicology #14

stepping out of the one tune technique for a very special reason.

my beautiful daughter is 12 today and one tune can’t express the love I feel for the kid so hold this 3 shot, listen them lyrics and feel the vibes.

it’s personal, subjective and from the bottom of my heart.

happy birthday beautiful child..this selections all yours….for real.

musicology #13

(Alton Ellis – Its Too Late To Turn Back Now)

Believe me when I tell you .. it’s not easy choosing what piece to throw down. seems like every time I set myself to post, something more suitable appears, (that’s what comes of listening to music day and night I suppose !!)

Not that I’m complaining as music is nutrition for the soul but personally I find it very easy to get ‘lost in music’ which is fine if theres nothing else that needs doing but in this age that luxury is for the few, (and I’m not one of ’em!!)

Hold this majestic piece of Sunday afternoon lovers from the vaults ..

musicology #12

(Marvin Gaye – We Need Love)

sticking with the love & heart selection

one of Soul’s kings whose voice and choice of songs are second to none. taken from one of the most underrated albums of all time …

“it don’t matter what you are…..a thief , a beggar or even a superstar”

musicology #11

(Darryl Banks – Open The Door To Your Heart)

taking a detour from the 80’s boogie and providing themusicologists first
service of product. requested by the agingmod, this piece needs no introduction.

two minutes 20 seconds of pure bliss that every time it’s heard warms the cockles of ones heart.

according to a foundation musicologist…this was a BIG tune at ‘the apples’ in deepest, darkest SouthEast London back in ’66 and a genuine Mod classic.

what is Mod? in essence a London born street style from 1962-1966 which has since gone on to be not only internationally known, but also extremely influential both in fashion and attitude. Mod was and continues to be a working class kick up the establishment arse….

musicology #10

day3

(Kleeer – Open Your Mind)

I did say no philosophy but, things change…

still sticking with the pucker boogie..and letting music do the talking. but had to mix in a bit of spoken word……y’know !!

It’s the full 12″.. thought about editing out the sax solo out but it wouldnt be the same without it so it stays..feeling it strong and it’s all good.

musicology #9

moving and juggling…

when the world is down on you……love’s somewhere around…and I want you to know that….(sing along with me children)…joy and pain are like sunshine and rain.

a jazz funk anthem that still sounds just as good as when first heard more than 20 years ago..respect is most certainly due to Maze and Mr Frankie Beverley

if life is rough and your relationship is suffering and you don’t know how to breakthrough … send your companion a link to this one tell them the musicologist would like a word, and if this doesnt communicate the message then nothing will and it may be time to make a move

musicology #8

Womack&Womack – Baby I’m Scared Of You

the musicologist can see a clearer path and has made resolutions.

for the next few weeks i’ll be throwing down 1 piece at a time,
(a.k.a the one tune technique), the reason:

a soundtrack for metamorphosis/change that I would love to share using the
universal language.

the time has come to make a move and I can only hope the music does the talking.

feeling it…… then lets trip back to the early 80’s and the days of Lois Jumbo’s, Diadora, Adidas, Fila , Pringle and Aquascutum sported with authentic mod panache whilst line dancing at the ‘Ly, Cinderellas, Samanthas, Gullivers and Flicks.

First up…one for the ladies out there…but don’t play man for cheap…and bear in mind that he need a little mo’ too…..

musicology #7

“many say that life entered the human body by the help of music, but the truth is that life itself is music.” -Inayat Khan-

I wanna Thank You -Enchanters / Meditation – Cyclones & Count Ossie / The Makings Of You – Curtis Mayfield

musicology #6

this 3 shot combo finds themusicologist in troubled waters and reflects where my mind is at. A dance between tranquility, solitude and love.

“In your light I learn how to love.
In your beauty, how to make poems.

You dance inside my chest,
where no one sees you,

but sometimes I do,
and that sight becomes this art”.

-Rumi-

musicology #5

“after silence the closest thing to expressing the inexpressible is music”. -Aldous Huxley-

hold tight, watch the ride and hear my plea.

musicology#3

Cats…been a while since posting. To be honest I’ve been digging deep in an attempt to define, (in my mind), what direction themusicologist is heading.

Initially the plan was to communicate using music…but communicate what exactly?

Well, of the doors I find myself standing at one is marked social commentary….No room for standing on the fence where this subject is concerned. Hold this 3 piece and let me know your thoughts.

We got to do something….

musicology #2

First bit of public speaking today on the subject closest to my heart….our daughter and the obstacles she has to overcome. The audience was none other than 7T, (her class), comprising of around thirty 11-12 year old girls. This may sound like an easy introduction to the art but the truth is I felt like Daniel in the lions den, something I share with Edgar Allen Poe, who also had the experience and found it to be just as challenging.

Having spent a few days/weeks/months making plans as to the message I aimed to communicate I felt mentally ready to deliver a considered and objective view on her current position but nothing could have prepared me for the reality of ‘fronting’ something so emotional and true to Steinbecks words of wisdom ‘the best laid plans of mice and men’ went astray and I found myself instead plumbing the depths of the soul.

As themusicologist I would have wielded a portable ‘system’ and let these pieces do the talking and then, if required, discussed the connection but that transition hasn’t occurred yet..so for all you knowledgecats who feel it and in honour to my eldest who climbs mountains and is a constant inspiration I am very proud to dedicate this trinity.

The message takes less than 10 minutes to deliver so if you want to navigate/browse or surf while soaking up the vibes, follow the link to a temporary solution.

musicology #1

Having worked out how to stream the universal language this is where themusicologist journey begins. To the right is a boxnet widget, It’s the portal for communicating the message. To make navigation more effective I am naming them all musicology with an appropriate # so discourse on these subjects should use this framework.

I decided to go with 3, 6, 9 in a row for many reasons, (the trinity, soundclash, magic number), but as this isnt the place to discuss philosophy or personal beliefs i decline to reason about it unless related to musicology.

Hold this 6 shot combo from 1962. A very important year especially for Mods, music and society as it was the year Soul made the transition from niche to genre.

All you Lyceum, Tottenham Royal, Greenwich Town Hall and Streatham Locarno cats feel free to throw some shapes… say yeah, yeah, yeah….say yeah, yeah, yeah.
